Collector care
Sleeve, binder, box or slab? Store each card for its job
A practical protection ladder for decks, trade stock, display cards and long-term collection pieces.
Protection starts before the expensive holder
Clean hands, a clear surface and careful handling do more than an elaborate storage product used badly. Hold cards by the edges, keep drinks away from the sorting area and replace any sleeve that has trapped grit or developed a split seam.
Match the layer to the use
A card used weekly in a deck needs replaceable sleeves and a firm deck box. A set collection needs a side-loading, ring-free binder. Trade stock benefits from clear condition visibility. A high-value card being posted needs rigid protection and immobilisation. Our current protection range is centred on Grailguard products.
- Deck card: inner sleeve if desired, durable outer sleeve, fitted deck box.
- Binder card: penny or perfect-fit sleeve, side-loading archival-style pocket.
- Trade card: clear sleeve and appropriate rigid or semi-rigid holder.
- Long-term raw card: clean sleeve, rigid protection, labelled storage box.
- Display card: UV-conscious position away from direct sun and large temperature swings.
Avoid the quiet damage
Heat, humidity, sunlight and pressure work slowly. Store cards upright in a dry interior room, away from radiators, loft temperature swings and exterior-wall condensation. Do not overfill binder pockets or boxes, and never use elastic bands around card stacks.
Check stored cards a few times a year. Look for warped holders, sleeve clouding, binder pressure and any sign of moisture before the issue spreads.
When a slab makes sense
Professional encapsulation adds authentication, a condition opinion and a robust holder. It is not the only safe way to own a card. Use it when those benefits matter to the purpose of the collection, then protect the slab from scratches with a sleeve or fitted storage case.
