Grading

Should you grade your card? A collector-first decision guide

A practical way to decide whether grading adds protection, confidence or value—or simply adds cost.

01

Start with the reason, not the grade

A slab is useful when you want independent authentication, a consistent condition opinion and long-term physical protection. It can also make a card easier to compare or sell. None of that means every rare card should be graded.

Ask what success looks like before spending anything. A sentimental card may be worth encapsulating even if it is inexpensive. A valuable card may be better left raw if visible wear means the likely grade will not justify the full submission cost.

Grade because the finished slab serves a purpose—not because social media makes grading feel compulsory.
02

Run a five-point condition check

Use bright, neutral light and inspect the card outside its sleeve. Never clean, polish or alter it. You are looking for obvious reasons that the likely result may fall below your expectations.

  • Centreing: compare the visible borders on the front and back.
  • Corners: look for whitening, compression or tiny bends.
  • Edges: check for chips, silvering and rough factory cuts.
  • Surface: tilt the card to reveal scratches, dents and print lines.
  • Authenticity and alteration: stop if anything about the print, stock or finish feels wrong.
03

Compare the whole cost

The headline grading fee is only one part of the decision. Include delivery to the submission service, return postage, insurance, possible declared-value charges and the time your card will be away.

Then compare recent sold prices for the same card in raw condition and in realistic grades—not only the highest grade. If the numbers only work when your card receives a perfect score, the plan is speculation rather than a margin of safety.

04

Choose the grader for the card

Black Label Grading provides UK access to PSA, Beckett Grading Services and CGC. Each has a different market profile and service structure. PSA is widely recognised, Beckett is known for detailed subgrades, and CGC offers a modern option popular across trading-card categories.

Use BLG’s current service information to compare turnaround expectations, declared-value limits and pricing before ordering. Trading Card Games customers can use UKCARDSHOW for 5% off a BLG order.
