Collecting

Build a collection you will still like in a year

A simple collecting system that puts your taste and budget ahead of release-day noise.

01

Give the collection a sentence

“I collect everything” is exciting for a week and expensive forever. A useful collection starts with a sentence narrow enough to guide the next purchase: one character, one artist, one era, one set, one deck or one type of sealed product.

The sentence can change later. Its job is to make today’s decision easier and stop unrelated hype from spending tomorrow’s budget.

02

Split the budget into three lanes

Create separate allowances for planned cards, spontaneous fun and protection. A practical starting split is 70% for the defined collection, 20% for discoveries and 10% for Grailguard sleeves, binders and storage. Adjust it, but keep protection as a real cost rather than an afterthought.

A monthly ceiling is more useful than a promise to “be sensible” during a launch.
03

Buy the experience you actually want

Opening packs is entertainment with uncertain results. Buying a single is a direct route to a known card. A booster box, collection box and individual single are not interchangeable purchases even when they feature the same set.

  • Open sealed products when the opening experience is part of the value.
  • Buy singles when the card itself is the goal.
  • Use starter or structure products when learning to play is the goal.
  • Treat pre-orders as a commitment, not a free reservation.
04

Keep a collection record

Record the card, set, language, condition, purchase date and total cost including postage. Add where it is stored and whether it has a receipt or grading certificate. This is useful for insurance, resale and simply avoiding duplicates.

Review the record every three months. Sell or trade items that no longer fit instead of allowing the collection to become permanent clutter.
